New gateway extends the OpenLAN management plane from WAN edge to wireless client

HSINCHU, Taiwan: Edgecore Networks, a leading provider of network solutions for enterprises, data centers, and telecommunication service providers, today announced the availability of the Z1, a programmable open-source edge gateway powered by VyOS. By adding Z1 to Edgecore's existing portfolio of OpenWiFi access points, OpenLAN switches, and CloudSDK-compatible controller, operators can now manage an entire network stack from WAN edge to wireless client under a unified management platform

The Z1 runs VyOS, an open-source network operating system, and supports enterprise-grade routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, OSPFv3, and RIP, along with multi-protocol VPN encryption via OpenVPN and WireGuard. Built on an open software foundation, the Z1 provides operators the flexibility to extend and customize the platform for differentiated managed services without requiring hardware replacement. The hardware supports dual-WAN connectivity via GbE or SFP interfaces, VRRP high availability, WAN load-balancing, and delivers 1Gbps SPI firewall throughput in a compact 670g desktop form factor.

The Z1 also supports the Cloud Package Manager (CPM) defined under the OpenLAN specification. CPM enables any OpenLAN-compliant controller to remotely deploy versioned feature packages to Z1 devices without requiring whole firmware updates or on-site maintenance, enabling MSPs to efficiently update and extend gateway functionality across distributed deployments.

The Z1 is purpose-built for MSPs managing distributed deployments including multi-dwelling units (MDUs), campus buildings, and enterprise branch locations. In these deployments, the Z1 functions as the centralized WAN edge gateway for the entire site, providing multi-WAN failover, building-wide DHCP, and secure VPN tunneling back to the MSP data center. With the Z1, OpenLAN APs, and OLS switches are all managed through the same OpenLAN-compliant controller, MSPs can operate and monitor the entire network infrastructure from one unified interface without requiring separate controllers for different device types.

"The Z1 completes the OpenLAN stack," said Teng Tai Hsu, VP of Product at Edgecore Networks. "Operators have been looking for a gateway that integrates seamlessly into the OpenLAN ecosystem and can be managed alongside the APs and switches through the same platform, without introducing another management tool. The Z1 delivers that capability. And because it is built on open-source platform, operators have the flexibility to extend, customize, and develop differentiated services on top what we provide."

The Z1 is centrally managed through Edgecore ecCLOUD and support network monitoring through SNMP, NetFlow, sFlow, and Syslog. The platform is certified to FCC, CE, LVD, and IC.

The Z1 is now available. For more information, visit wifi.edge-core.com or contact ecwifi-info@edge-core.com.
