Scaling companies can empower team and agent spending with controls, policy, enforcement, and transparency.

SAN FRANCISCO: Mercury, the technology company providing radically different banking*, today launched Mercury Spend, an expanded spend management solution that lets businesses issue employee and agent cards and manage team spending. While founders are building companies faster than ever, with leaner teams, their finance tools have not kept pace. Spend combines intelligent budgets and controls, self-enforcing expense policies, and a new class of cards designed specifically for AI agents. Unlike traditional spend management tools that require a finance team to configure, integrate, and manage, Mercury Spend is built directly into the banking dashboard, so the controls, visibility, and data needed to run a business are all in one place.

“Companies can be smaller and faster than they were two years ago, and they’re a mix of people and agents doing real work,” said Immad Akhund, CEO and co-founder of Mercury. “Founders need a scalable and programmatic way to manage spending, understand where money is going, and automate the busywork of receipts and accounting. With Mercury Spend, founders can give their teams and agents a real spending infrastructure, not just a card.”

Mercury Spend offers a centralized budget and policy system built around how scaling teams work. Spend includes:

  • Budgets: Within minutes and without a finance team, founders can create budgets for specific purposes, such as travel, software, or procurement and issue cards to teammates with limits that enforce automatically. Transactions that exceed a budget are declined at the point of sale. Merchants can be restricted by name or merchant category code.
  • AI Agent Cards: As businesses delegate more operational work to AI agents, teams can issue cards that give agents the ability to complete purchases end-to-end within policies set by a human. Agent cards can only be created by a human and are trackable, auditable, and cancellable. The agent can transact within defined limits and cannot bypass or change them.
  • Automated Accounting: Transactions are then automatically routed to the right budget, and admins can configure additional rules to control how spending feeds into accounting systems. Receipts are collected through a Gmail integration that scans a connected inbox to match receipts to the right transactions, or through receipt texting, which lets employees reply with a receipt photo.
  • Policy Enforcement: Cards can be automatically frozen when a required receipt, memo, or category is missing and stay frozen until the employee completes the outstanding task.
  • Finance Visibility: Spend connects directly to a company's existing cash position and runway, so team spending is visible alongside the full financial picture from day one, without an additional tool to configure or connect.
  • AI Integration: Every function in Mercury Spend is accessible through Command,** Mercury's AI layer which lets customers tell Mercury what to do in natural language, and the work gets done with their approval. Manage spending, check the cash position, set auto rules, send an invoice, and more, from a single conversation without navigating menus or switching between tools.

As part of the Spend launch, Mercury is also releasing a limited-edition IO card designed in collaboration with sculptor, ceramicist, and designer Simone Bodmer-Turner. The card is derived from an original sculpture Bodmer-Turner created for Mercury, rendered with premium layered printing that makes it tactile and dimensional.

Mercury Spend is now live for Mercury business banking* customers.
