Collaboration Will Support Development of 5G-Powered Drone Sensing Solutions to Meet National Security and Critical Infrastructure Needs

RESTON, Va.: NextNav Inc. (NASDAQ:NN), a leader in next-generation terrestrial Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) and 3D geolocation solutions, today announced Tiami Networks as a sensing ecosystem partner for 5G-powered counter unmanned aircraft system (UAS) detection solutions. The integrated sensing and communications (ISAC)-focused partnership between the companies will advance NextNav’s effort to leverage its 5G PNT Network to simultaneously deliver scalable long-range, wide-area sensing capabilities.

The partnership builds on NextNav’s investments in a ground-based 5G-powered 3D PNT solution utilizing its licensed Lower 900 MHz band spectrum.

“NextNav is excited to partner with Tiami Networks as it continues to evaluate how 5G-powered sensing can support counter-UAS detection and other mission-critical airspace and ground-based applications,” said David Gell, Vice President of Business Development at NextNav. “The need for longer range situational awareness has never been more urgent as drones continue to threaten large-scale events, critical infrastructure, and government and military facilities including airports.”

NextNav’s 5G PNT Network in Santa Clara County, California, will serve as a testbed for evaluating long range, 900 MHz based sensing capabilities and use cases, including counter-UAS detection and airspace awareness, while simultaneously delivering accurate 3D PNT information with no additional load on the network.

“NextNav’s 5G PNT Network provides a compelling platform for demonstrating how 5G infrastructure can support positioning, timing, and sensing,” said Dr. Amitav Mukherjee, CEO at Tiami Networks. “By combining NextNav’s low-band 5G capabilities with Tiami’s expertise in integrated sensing and communications, we have an opportunity to evaluate scalable, wide-area UAS detection and other mission-critical sensing applications.”

This agreement marks an important milestone in demonstrating long range 5G-powered sensing capabilities in the larger ISAC ecosystem. Results from the collaboration will support ongoing assessments of performance and applicability across critical infrastructure and national security use cases.
