Oath Surgical's Portland-based AI-native surgical center becomes the first in the Pacific Northwest to deliver bilateral HGNS therapy in an ambulatory surgery center setting

SAN FRANCISCO: Oath Surgical today announced that Dr. Andrew Patel has performed the first of its kind implant procedure in Oregon and the first in the Pacific Northwest to take place in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting. The milestone expands access to an innovative treatment option in a state where an estimated 1.1 million residents, or 31% of the population, have mild to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), including approximately 165,000 people in Portland.

Genio, developed by Nyxoah, is an FDA-approved therapy for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. It is the first single-incision bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) therapy, with no implanted battery and full 3T MRI compatibility, designed to treat sleep apnea by working with the body's natural bilateral airway control system.

The procedure was performed at Oath Surgical's downtown Portland, Oregon facility, one of three AI-native outpatient surgical centers the company owns and operates in the region. Oath uses its purpose-built OathOS clinical intelligence system to support these advanced implant procedures in an outpatient setting. OathOS connects every step of the patient journey, from referral and scheduling through device activation, outcomes tracking, and long-term post-operative engagement, into a single unified system.

"For too long, patients in Oregon who struggled with CPAP had limited options and often had to travel outside the region to explore surgical alternatives," said Dr. Andrew Patel, Head and Neck Surgeon at Oath Surgical. "This new procedure is a real step forward for sleep apnea patients. It is bilateral, requires only a single incision, and has no implanted battery, which makes it an easier conversation to have with patients who have been hesitant about surgery. Performing this first case at Oath gave us the right environment to do it well. My focus now is on building a consistent, high-quality program here that puts patient outcomes and long-term follow-up at the center."

"Bringing higher acuity care like this to Oregon is exactly the kind of milestone our platform was built to support," said Oliver Keown, MD, Founder and CEO of Oath Surgical. "Oath's surgical centers are designed for advanced outpatient procedures, and Dr. Patel and the team have shown that bilateral HGNS therapy can be delivered safely and efficiently outside of a hospital setting. We think this is the beginning of a much broader shift in how sleep apnea care is accessed across the region."

Pacific Northwest patients seeking sleep apnea therapy no longer need to travel outside the region to access this option. For patients who have struggled with CPAP, the procedure offers a mask-free alternative that works with the body's natural airway control rather than relying on external equipment worn every night. Dr. Andrew Patel accepts referrals from sleep medicine specialists, primary care physicians, cardiologists, dental providers, and other providers in the community. OathOS is designed to reduce delays that can lengthen the pathway from CPAP intolerance to effective surgical intervention. The facility's workflows and technology infrastructure are designed specifically for complex implant procedures, reducing the operational gaps that can affect outcomes in a standard outpatient setting.

Oath is building an ecosystem of medical device integrations, connecting device manufacturers with an AI-native outpatient surgical platform designed around clinical, operational, and economic outcomes data.

Oath Surgical is backed by $35 million in total funding from FPV Ventures, McKesson Ventures, and other healthcare investors. The company partners with more than 100 surgeons throughout Portland, Oregon and over 175 additional surgeons across its expanding national network of affiliated ASCs.
