Legal professionals are saving 5-10 hours of work each week, putting pressure on traditional billing models and reshaping how firms operate

OAKLAND, Calif.: Everlaw, the AI-powered litigation and investigation platform, today released its 2026 Legal AI Adoption & Impact Report, revealing that generative AI has crossed a major adoption threshold in the legal industry. Nearly half (49%) of legal professionals surveyed are actively using generative AI, up 12 percentage points from last year.

The latest report from Everlaw, the Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists (ACEDS), and the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) examines how more than 250 legal professionals are navigating the changing role of technology across their organizations. The findings point to a profession at an inflection point, as efficiency gains create new possibilities for legal teams while raising fundamental questions about billing, governance, and the development of future legal talent.

Key Findings:

• Generative AI Is Reaching the Legal Industry at Unprecedented Speed: 90% of respondents are either already using or planning to use generative AI in their legal work. In four years, AI has reached a level of adoption that it took cloud-based ediscovery software 12 years to reach. This 3x pace of acceleration signals a mindset shift in the legal industry, as modern legal teams move from cautious adoption to actively seeking out transformative technology.
• AI Is Delivering Measurable Time Savings: 17% of respondents state generative AI saves them 5-10 hours per week, an increase from just 8% last year. At a 100-attorney firm, five hours saved per attorney each week would amount to 500 hours of reclaimed capacity every week - the equivalent of adding more than 10 full-time team members without increasing headcount.
• Generative AI Is Putting the Billable Hour Under Pressure: Half of respondents believe generative AI has already significantly altered conventional billing practices or will do so within the next year. 19% say AI has already significantly altered billing practices, up 8 percentage points from last year, while another 31% expect a significant impact in the next year. More than half also agree that generative AI will create pressures on the conventional billable hour model and increase interest in alternative fee arrangements.

“AI adoption has reached an inflection point. Clients are reassessing how they want their work to be done and how they measure and express the value of AI-assisted work. We are seeing a new AI-driven value framework,” said Chuck Kellner, Senior Strategic Discovery Advisor at Everlaw. “Agentic AI will push that shift even further, coordinating complex workflows that once required hours of human effort.”

While just 3% of respondents are currently deploying autonomous agents, nearly 30% are piloting multi-agent systems, and 42% see the greatest potential for autonomous AI agents in synthesizing fragmented data into structured case timelines and witness profiles. Meanwhile, AI adoption is outpacing organizational policies: one-third of respondents say their organizations have no formal written policy governing generative AI, while the industry remains split on whether to proactively disclose AI use to clients.
