New services help enterprises control AI usage, manage consumption costs and protect contractual rights as forthcoming DBTA research reveals growing licensing challenges
LOS ANGELES: #AI--LicenseFortress®, an independent software licensing advisory firm, today announced its AI Licensing and Governance Services division, helping enterprises understand where AI is operating, how its use affects software costs and contractual obligations, and which controls are needed before adoption scales.
The division extends LicenseFortress’s software licensing, contract negotiation and audit defense expertise to copilots, autonomous agents, embedded AI features and the infrastructure supporting enterprise AI. Services address the growing complexity of licensing models tied to tokens, API calls, credits and other consumption measures, alongside existing user- and infrastructure-based agreements.
Forthcoming research from LicenseFortress and Database Trends and Applications (DBTA) points to a growing challenge for enterprises: managing the licensing consequences of AI adoption. More than half of respondents (53%) said AI implementation has made software licensing more difficult, making it the most frequently cited initiative, ahead of cloud migration and multi-cloud. Meanwhile, 54% identified tracking AI usage among their biggest AI licensing challenges. Together, these findings highlight the need to connect AI adoption with usage visibility, cost controls and clear contractual rights. Further findings will be released in the full research report.
“Organizations are being asked to adopt AI quickly, but the licensing consequences can reach well beyond the tool a team initially approves,” said Dr. Michael Corey, co-founder and chief operating officer of LicenseFortress. “An embedded feature or autonomous agent can introduce new charges, change how existing systems are used and raise questions the original agreement never anticipated. Enterprises need a clear view of that exposure before it becomes a renewal dispute or an audit claim.”
LicenseFortress’s AI Licensing and Governance Services bring together three areas: AI usage visibility, cost and consumption governance, and audit and contract defense. The division helps organizations connect technical activity to contractual entitlements and establish accountability for how AI capabilities are enabled and used.
Services include:
The division builds on LicenseFortress’s existing expertise across Oracle, Microsoft, IBM, SAP and VMware by Broadcom, connecting AI licensing oversight with software asset management, FinOps and ongoing compliance programs.
“Knowing that an AI feature is available does not tell you whether your organization is entitled to use it, how it will be billed or what an agent’s activity means under your contract,” said Dean Bolton, co-founder and chief architect of LicenseFortress. “We help clients connect what is happening in their environment to what their agreements actually permit, then put controls in place to manage the cost and licensing implications.”
LicenseFortress provides independent advice, does not sell vendor licenses and takes no vendor commissions. Its licensing specialists work alongside software contract attorneys to help clients assess obligations, preserve negotiated rights and challenge unsupported vendor claims.
