Suki and Wolters Kluwer release the first product integration of the UpToDate Expert AI API, embedding trusted, evidence-based clinical reasoning directly into the Suki clinical workflow

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. & WALTHAM, Mass.: Suki, the leader in Ambient Clinical Intelligence (ACI), today announced the availability of Ask across Epic, Oracle Health, athenahealth, and MEDITECH, bringing patient-specific information and trusted clinical intelligence from UpToDate into the Suki for Clinicians app. Ask allows clinicians to use spoken natural language or typed questions to quickly surface information such as medications, allergies, vitals, lab results, and chronic conditions without manually searching through the EHR.

Unlike standalone clinical reasoning tools, Ask - powered by the Wolters Kluwer UpToDate® Expert AI API - integrates trusted, evidence-based clinical reasoning directly into clinicians’ workflows. Through Ask, clinicians with UpToDate access can ask complex clinical questions and receive answers grounded exclusively in UpToDate’s proprietary clinical content, developed and maintained by more than 7,600 physician authors, editors, and peer reviewers. Responses include transparent sourcing for the underlying clinical evidence, along with medication and dosing considerations and links to supporting content and drug monographs - bringing trusted clinical decision support into the same workflow where clinicians access patient-specific information.

The UpToDate Expert AI API enables healthcare technology partners to embed trusted, source-grounded clinical intelligence directly into EHRs, ambient documentation platforms, clinical agents, and conversational assistants. Built on UpToDate’s gold-standard evidence-based content and editorial rigor, the API places actionable clinical decision support within existing workflows. The new API offers flexible integration options for UpToDate users, source-connected outputs, and controls designed specifically for healthcare.

“Clinicians need trusted clinical intelligence from wherever they are in their clinical workflow,” said Yaw Fellin, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Clinical Decision Support and Provider Solutions, Wolters Kluwer Health. “Through this partnership, we’re extending the ability for them to easily access answers from UpToDate Expert AI directly from Ask in Suki for Clinicians without having to leave their workflow.”

Clinicians routinely navigate fragmented information across the EHR while simultaneously evaluating patients, documenting encounters, and making clinical decisions. Finding a previous lab result, confirming a medication, reviewing patient history, or researching a clinical question can require multiple searches and workflow changes. According to the American Medical Association, extraneous cognitive load is associated with 87% of individual medical errors, while research on task-switching has shown that repeatedly shifting attention can reduce productivity. Ask replaces much of that manual hunting with natural conversation.

A clinician can ask Suki questions such as, “What was this patient’s last A1C?”, “What medications is she currently taking?”, or “Does she have any documented allergies?” When a question requires broader clinical knowledge, Ask can surface evidence-based information powered by UpToDate Expert AI without requiring the clinician to leave the Suki experience. Together, these capabilities provide a single conversational interface for interacting with both patient-specific context and trusted clinical knowledge.

“Ambient AI started by helping clinicians document the encounter, but its potential is much larger,” said Abhi Pathak, Chief Product Officer at Suki. “With Ask, clinicians can now interact with the information they need through natural conversation, whether that means understanding what has happened with a particular patient or accessing trusted clinical knowledge from UpToDate. We’re building toward a future where clinicians spend less time navigating technology and more time using information to care for patients.”

Early evaluations showed a strong preference for patient-context-aware responses, with clinician evaluators choosing responses from UpToDate Expert AI that incorporated Suki-supplied patient context 83% of the time, compared with responses without patient context (p<0.001). The preference is held across clinical management, clinical safety, diagnosis, screening, and dosing queries, with patient-context integration emerging as the primary driver of preference. The findings underscore the potential of combining Suki’s Ambient Clinical Intelligence with UpToDate’s trusted clinical reasoning to deliver more relevant, context-aware guidance.

The launch of Ask reflects Suki’s broader vision for Ambient Clinical Intelligence, expanding ambient AI beyond documentation to support clinical reasoning, assisted revenue cycle workflows, and operational tasks. Suki is bringing these capabilities together with patient context and intelligence from across the healthcare ecosystem to create a more connected AI experience for clinicians. Ask is one example of that vision in action, making the information clinicians need accessible through the simplest interface possible: a question. “Ask” is available today across Epic, Oracle Health, athenahealth, and MEDITECH.
