New regional committee will engage Japanese stakeholders, support local adoption, and bring market perspectives to FiRa use case and specification development

BEAVERTON, Ore.: The FiRa® Consortium has established the FiRa Japan Committee, a permanent regional committee dedicated to engaging stakeholders in Japan and supporting the adoption of FiRa technology. The committee will also bring Japanese requirements and perspectives to FiRa use case and specification development.

The committee will give FiRa members and other key stakeholders a forum to exchange information, identify adoption challenges, and share feedback with FiRa Working Groups. It will also make FiRa information more accessible through Japanese-language materials and communications.

Strong Interest at Inaugural Meeting

More than 90 people attended the FiRa Japan Committee’s inaugural meeting, reflecting strong interest in FiRa technology across multiple industries. Participants discussed priorities for the Japanese market and opportunities to bring local perspectives into FiRa’s work.

“The strong turnout shows the value of creating a dedicated forum for Japan,” said Yo Tabayashi of Sony and Chair of the Japan Committee. “We want to make FiRa information more accessible, bring stakeholders together, and give the Japanese market a clear way to contribute to FiRa’s use cases and specifications.”

“The Japan Committee will help us build stronger connections with stakeholders in Japan,” said Sunil Jogi, President of the FiRa Consortium. “Their insights will support local adoption while strengthening FiRa’s global work on use cases and specifications.”

Engaging Stakeholders in Japan

The Japan Committee will focus on:

  • Promoting awareness and adoption of FiRa technology in Japan through Japanese-language materials, outreach, and local events
  • Engaging public transit agencies, financial institutions, standardization bodies, industry associations, and others to understand market needs and adoption challenges
  • Providing Japanese market requirements, feedback, and recommendations with the relevant FiRa Working Groups
  • Fostering relationships with organizations and standardization bodies that can help advance FiRa technology in Japan

Building Momentum

The Japan Committee’s next meeting is planned for December 2026. FiRa will share additional information with members and interested stakeholders as details are finalized.
