PITTSBURGH: Today, Abridge announced that the University of Chicago Medicine will make Abridge's generative AI platform for clinical documentation available to groups of clinicians across their system. UChicago Medicine is focused on improving clinician wellness and transforming the patient experience using evidence-based technology.

UChicago Medicine and Abridge will collaborate on research as part of the initial deployment, measuring how Abridge’s Epic-integrated AI platform impacts clinician wellness, retention, and patient outcomes. Several health systems across the country are already evaluating the improvement in clinician well-being with Abridge. UChicago Medicine teams hope to take a deeper look at additional population health signals that may be derived from structured clinical conversation data, including more accurately capturing the social determinants of health impacting their most complex and vulnerable patients.

“The ability to effortlessly and accurately capture every clinician-patient conversation will be one of the most important paradigm shifts in healthcare within our careers,” said Dr. Sachin D. Shah, Chief Medical Information Officer, UChicago Medicine. “We hope this type of emerging technology will not only allow our clinicians to focus more completely on their patients, but also help us explore new insights from their conversations. Until now, these conversations have been a lost dataset. Having more structured data enables us to know and care for our patients better, while also analyzing key metrics that we have never before been able to measure.”

Abridge generates a draft note in real-time based on the conversation between the clinician and patient. Once clinicians review and verify the note, the patient record in Epic is updated automatically. UChicago Medicine will also serve as a development site for new experimental workflows enabled by Abridge’s co-development relationship with Epic.

“We are excited to work with UChicago Medicine, and deploy technology that improves the care delivery experience,” said Dr. Shiv Rao, CEO and Founder of Abridge. “We are also privileged to partner together on a broader research vision, studying the impact of responsible AI on a diverse clinician and patient population.”

This news follows successful deployments of the Abridge technology at Sutter Health, Yale New Haven Health System, UCI Health, Emory Healthcare, The University of Kansas Health System, UPMC, and dozens of other health systems. Abridge recently announced a $150M Series C financing, which includes a strategic investment from NVIDIA.

About Abridge

Abridge was founded in 2018 with the mission of powering deeper understanding in healthcare. The AI-powered platform was purpose-built for medical conversations, improving clinical documentation efficiencies while enabling clinicians to focus on what matters most—their patients. With support for 14+ languages and 50+ specialties, Abridge is able to support a wide range of clinician and patient encounters.

Abridge’s enterprise-grade technology transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time with deep EMR integrations. Powered by Linked Evidence and their auditable AI, Abridge is the only company that maps AI-generated summaries to ground truth, helping providers quickly trust and verify the output. As pioneers in generative AI for healthcare, Abridge is setting the industry standards for the responsible deployment of AI across health systems.

In a survey by KLAS across multiple systems that have adopted the platform, Abridge scored a 95.3 rating (out of 100) with a grade of A+ on the likelihood to recommend, and time to outcomes being reported as immediate. Abridge was also recently recognized on the 2024 Forbes AI 50 list, alongside companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, and others.
