Mark Lamberti Advocates for Urgent Collaboration in Era of AI and Technological Transformation

JOHANNESBURG: Distinguished business leader Dr. Mark Lamberti recently delivered a compelling keynote address at the Academy of Management Perspectives (AMP) editorial board's annual meeting in Johannesburg, calling for a radical bridging of the divide between management scholars and business practitioners. Drawing on his 40 years of experience leading multinational corporations before pursuing his doctorate in 2020, Lamberti urged academics and business leaders to develop a "truly proactive symbiotic relationship between equals" to address unprecedented technological and geopolitical challenges.

The speech, titled "Thoughts from an Aspiring 'Pracademic'," highlighted the growing urgency for collaboration in an era of artificial intelligence, technological disruption, and shifting global power dynamics. Lamberti emphasized that traditional tensions between academics and practitioners – differing objectives, timeframes, and incentives – must be overcome to meet these challenges.

"The elimination of the scholar-practitioner divide is an imperative," stated Lamberti. "My appeal to you this evening is therefore that the Academy of Management Perspectives redoubles, publicises and disseminates its efforts to lead scholars and practitioners beyond information sharing and collaboration, to a truly proactive symbiotic relationship between equals."

His address identified several key challenges hindering effective collaboration, including the inaccessibility of academic writing, practitioners' time constraints, competing incentive structures, and the rise of alternative information sources that sometimes undermine established expertise. Lamberti also noted how the rapid advancement of AI and machine learning is fundamentally transforming management practices, requiring new technical competencies alongside enhanced soft skills.

The keynote particularly praised the Academy of Management Perspectives journal for its mission to bridge scholarship and practice, highlighting initiatives like Practitioner Perspectives and Constructive Conversations as important steps toward meaningful collaboration.

The event, which attracted Academy of Management Perspectives editorial board members from around the world, was held at the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg.
