BOULDER, Colo. & SAN JOSE, Calif.: #ATMdisplay--Rain Technology, creator of the world’s most advanced directional display technologies, is showcasing key innovations today for embedded switchable privacy on virtually every imaginable display — mobile devices, laptops, tablets, POS, ATM, medical check-in kiosks, and automotive in-cabin entertainment.

Rain Technology Showcase

  • Embedded display privacy innovations are showcased this week at Society for Information Display (SID) Display Week 2025 (Booth #1922) at the San Jose Convention Center.
  • Chief Scientist Michael G. Robinson, Ph.D., will present a detailed technical paper on these innovations, “Functionality Enhancement for e-Privacy Display,” on Thursday, May 15, at 1:50 p.m. (Session 64, Paper #2). Additional authors of the paper are Jonathan Harrold, Graham J. Woodgate, Benjamin C. Ihas, and Robert A. Ramsey.
  • Robinson will also be presenting with other scientists and pioneers at the Poster Session and Reception, on Thursday, May 15, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. (Poster #243).

The need for privacy in an increasingly digital world is undeniable. Whether it’s ensuring that a laptop screen remains secure in public spaces, protecting automotive infotainment screens from distracting the driver, or creating a more engaging customer experience in retail environments, embedded display innovations offer practical solutions. To address this demand for privacy, manufacturers and brands are now embedding cutting-edge optical components in their display units.

“Privacy of our displays has just been taken to the next level,” said Paul Treichler, head of sales and marketing at Rain Technology. “As digital devices become more embedded in our daily lives, the demand for seamless, secure display experiences is accelerating — and so is innovation. This next evolution in privacy display technology opens the door to more versatile, cost-effective solutions with superior user experience that have wide-reaching impact across industries.”

Key Innovations

1.

Share Mode Efficiency

In commercial LCD privacy displays, switchable liquid crystal retarders (SLCRs) combined with backlights provide angular control of light. This technology underpins the thin proprietary layer that comprises Switchable Privacy™ by Rain Technology. While privacy mode suppresses off-axis visibility, share mode often results in reduced luminance and image quality, as a compromise needed to maintain privacy. To address this, increasing the display’s luminance or altering the backlight profile can improve share mode visibility. However, it is essential to find a balance in these adjustments that improves share mode visibility without sacrificing privacy.

2.

Privacy Mode Efficiency

The diffractive switchable liquid crystal retarders (D-SLCR) can also be used in a high-efficiency mode, which optimizes the head-on display luminance while not requiring the widest share mode performance. This mode is useful in situations where visibility from off-axis angles is less critical, such as in environments that prioritize users primarily viewing the display head-on. Optimized for automotive cabins and point-of-sale or ATM displays, these new optical stacks promise to deliver high performance and cost-efficiencies, making privacy displays more affordable and power-efficient for mass-market applications.

3.

Display Screen Branding

In applications such as automotive dashboards, retail environments, and sales showrooms, the off-axis viewing angle of a display is a key opportunity for marketing and branding promotions. Display Screen Branding™ meets this need by using a switchable pattern in the SLCR to enable off-axis branding, logo presentation, or messages. This can be applied to automotive displays, in which the driver is off-axis to the passenger display and only sees the automotive badge while the display is in No-Driver-Distraction™ mode. This design option extends to displays that are idle or switched off.

Additionally, when drivers or passengers first enter the vehicle and the display is off, they will see the automotive badge or logo, providing a new branding and design possibility. Similarly, retail POS or ATM display branding can be shown to peripheral viewers during transactions or while the display is inactive.

“The future of private displays is here. With this next generation of embedded Switchable Privacy capabilities, brands and manufacturers can stay ahead of the curve to deliver compelling privacy and branding solutions without compromising on user experience,” added Treichler.
