Building management team collaboration essential to support 21st century technological advancements

Extensive electrical systems upgrade includes new generator plant and improvements to the facility that hosts company’s LA1 data center

Supports growing demand for hybrid IT environments and interconnection requirements

LOS ANGELES: The iconic One Wilshire® is one of the most interconnected buildings in the world, hosting more than 300 networks and home to a variety of data centers that serve businesses along the West Coast. Many consider it the most vital carrier hotel in the western U.S., with estimates of as much as a third of all trans-Pacific traffic passing through the building. As a legacy carrier hotel, it was in need of system upgrades to meet the needs of modern hybrid IT infrastructure.

CoreSite, an American Tower company (NYSE: AMT) empowering critical business and AI workloads that impact everyday life through interconnected data center solutions, hosts its LA1 data center in One Wilshire and recently completed a complex infrastructure upgrade throughout the entire facility. CoreSite investments include installing a completely new, enterprise-class data center generator plant and upgrading the accompanying system, to provide the redundancy necessary to support the digital highways running through the building.

“Carrier hotels like One Wilshire play a key role in meeting enterprises’ interconnection needs, as they’re the central point for so many networks and carriers – and that’s not a capability you find in a lot of today’s purpose-built data centers,” said Anthony Hatzenbuehler, Senior Vice President of Operations at CoreSite. “Yet we need to make sure these legacy data centers can keep up with growing demand, to continue to create the cost-effective, secure and low-latency competitive edge needed to succeed in today’s business environment.”

During this mission-critical project, the CoreSite team had to contend with a variety of challenges, starting with the fact that this work was undertaken in one of the most risk-sensitive environments in the network ecosystem. The company also added other equipment and switchgear to the building located in downtown Los Angeles—while maintaining 24x7 operations of all customer deployments throughout the project.

“What I’m most proud of with the LA1 Riser Project is that, despite the high risk and sensitive environment, we were able to maintain a 100% uptime for all our clients,” said Joe Liccardo, Vice President of Data Center Operations at CoreSite. “When you’re working on one of the world’s most interconnected buildings and there isn’t a single negative impact to customer service – that’s really impressive.”

As technology leaders continue to turn to hybrid IT environments to efficiently and cost-effectively manage workloads, interconnection between the cloud and data centers is proving increasingly important. In fact, according to CoreSite’s 2025 State of the Data Center Report, while IT leaders rely on direct cloud connectivity through a colocation provider to accelerate digital transformation, only 19% say their colocation provider offers interconnection to a variety of cloud providers.

Carrier hotels like CoreSite’s LA1 facility provide companies the seamless integration and connectivity across applications and providers, while its purpose-built LA2 and LA3 data centers are designed to handle today’s AI and other high-density workloads. Combining the diverse capabilities of all three facilities, CoreSite’s Los Angeles data center campus is home to a vast array of domestic and international carriers, enterprises, communications service providers, media and entertainment firms, social networking sites and gaming companies. In addition, LA3 is certified as part of the NVIDIA DGX-Ready Data Center program, providing the power, cooling and interconnection needed to host scalable, high-performance infrastructure for organizations looking to capitalize on rising demand for AI, machine learning (ML) and other high-density applications.
