Merco partners with Toshiba to introduce new self-checkout solutions across northern Mexico, enhancing customer convenience and modernizing the shopping experience.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.: Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions announces that Merco, a leading regional supermarket chain in northern Mexico, is implementing its cutting-edge MxP™ Self-Checkout in stores across the region. Merco, known for its innovative approach to retail, recognized the need for a self-service solution that would enhance the customer experience and keep pace with the evolving expectations of its shoppers. Understanding these retailer needs, Toshiba’s MxP™ (Modular eXpansion Platform) represents a new era of self-service by combining modular flexibility with innovative designs to adapt to any store footprint, increase operational efficiency, and create a more seamless and satisfying shopping experience.

The partnership between Toshiba and Merco began with a successful pilot program in select stores, garnering positive feedback from customers and associates. Building upon the success of the initial installations, Merco is now exploring adding Toshiba’s ELERA® Security Suite with computer vision and AI-powered loss prevention and produce recognition. By interpreting shopper behavior in real time, retailers can unlock new levels of insight that transform the checkout journey, streamline operations, and elevate the role of store associates. Solutions like the ELERA® Security Suite signal a shift toward proactive, intelligence-driven protection, where advanced analytics and machine learning mitigate shrink and support connections with customers.

"Merco has always been a retail innovator in Monterrey, Mexico. I believe our investment in Toshiba’s self-checkout technology demonstrates our continued commitment to always put the customer first and enhance the service and experience when customers visit our stores,” said Eduardo Lozano, CIO/CFO at Merco.

As retail continues to evolve, the checkout experience is becoming a critical touchpoint for shopper satisfaction and operational efficiency. Toshiba is helping retailers lead this transformation by delivering self-checkout solutions that combine speed, flexibility, and intelligence. The result is a frictionless, future-ready experience that empowers store associates while meeting shopper expectations for convenience. By prioritizing excellent service, Merco aims to meet and exceed customer expectations, while also being a positive force in the communities it serves.

“Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions is proud to support Merco in its mission to elevate the shopping experience for its customers. Toshiba’s MxP™ Self Checkout is intuitive and easy to use, and it also provides the flexibility and intelligence needed to empower retailers to adapt to the evolving demands of modern retail,” said Eugene Shvartsman, SVP, Global Sales at Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions.

A global leader in retail technology, Toshiba worked with industry-leading partners Swedarey and Microsistemas Californianos on the successful self-checkout installation. Swedarey facilitated the sale of self-checkout solutions and services to Merco, complemented by MCSA's software and point-of-sale integration support. Together, this collaboration highlights Toshiba’s commitment to delivering innovative, customer-focused solutions that empower retailers like Merco to transform the shopping experience and drive long-term success.
