Megasuper is the first company to successfully implement AI-powered ELERA® Produce Recognition in the Central America and Caribbean region

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.: Costa Rica's leading retailer, Megasuper, is the first retailer in Central America and the Caribbean to adopt ELERA® Produce Recognition by Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions to transform checkout experiences and store operations. Building on the successful implementation of Toshiba’s self-checkout kiosks last year, Megasuper is maximizing the benefits of Toshiba’s modular hardware to expand their innovation investments to now include ELERA® Produce Recognition. More than ten percent of Megasuper checkouts are Toshiba’s MxP™ Self-Checkout solutions.

David Salazar, CEO at Megasuper said, "We firmly believe that the key to growth and progress is to listen and respond to the needs of our customers. The incorporation of innovative technologies such as Toshiba’s MxP™ Self-Checkout and ELERA® Produce Recognition is our way of thanking them for the trust and loyalty they show us every day. We constantly strive to be at the forefront and offer a more comfortable, faster, and more efficient service, because we understand that our customers deserve the best. Their loyalty motivates us to improve and transform the shopping experience, and we want to continue to be your benchmark supermarket, always committed to excellence and innovation."

Powered by the latest AI and computer vision technology, ELERA® Produce Recognition instantly and accurately identifies produce items, including non-barcoded produce, allowing shoppers to enjoy a faster, more seamless, modern checkout experience. By automatically recognizing produce placed on the self-checkout kiosk, shoppers aren’t required to enter codes manually. This shortens transaction times and improves overall operational efficiency to enhance customer satisfaction.

"Our shoppers continue to make us a leading retailer in Costa Rica, and our top priority is to provide better shopping experiences and customer service. Innovative solutions like Toshiba’s ELERA® Produce Recognition are shaping the future of retail by enabling faster and more accurate produce scanning to create a seamless checkout experience that our customers truly appreciate,” said Jonathan Velasquez, CIO at Megasuper. “Toshiba’s cutting-edge technology, trusted consulting guidance, and expert support services align with our goals to better connect with our shoppers and reaffirm us as a technology-driven retail leader.”

Key benefits of ELERA® Produce Recognition include:

  • Faster, smoother checkout: Shoppers scan produce and non-barcoded items quickly and accurately.
  • Optimized store operations: AI automation reduces transaction times and encourages self-checkout usage.
  • Enhanced loss prevention: Computer vision and AI improve accuracy and reduce shrink from misidentified items.
  • Improved customer satisfaction: A seamless checkout experience sets a new standard for modern grocery shopping.

“Toshiba is dedicated to empowering the next generation of retailers and bringing their innovation aspirations to life. As a global leader in retail technology, our ELERA® Produce Recognition solution shows how AI, combined with scalable and modular design, can transform store operations. We help innovative retailers like Megasuper optimize operations, reduce shrink, and deliver faster, smarter, and more seamless shopping experiences to set a new standard for the future of grocery shopping across the region,” said Eugene Shvartsman, SVP Global Sales at Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions.

Toshiba collaborated with trusted regional partners Rhiscom and GBM to successfully deliver and integrate ELERA® Produce Recognition into Megasuper’s operations. Rhiscom, a premier solutions integrator, successfully incorporated the new technology into existing point-of-sale systems on-site. Technology services leader GBM, worked closely with the team to provide the hardware, including self-checkout systems with EDGE cameras, the ELERA® Produce Recognition SaaS, and additional components, along with expert advice and ongoing support to enable an efficient and successful deployment.

ELERA® Produce Recognition is part of the award-winning ELERA® Security Suite, which was recognized with the 2024 RetailTech Breakthrough AI Innovation of the Year Award, the Convrt Best AI Integration Award, and the Best AI in Retail Merit Technology Award. This recognition highlights Toshiba’s leadership in AI-driven retail solutions that reduce loss, boost efficiency, create smoother shopping experiences, and set new benchmarks for innovation.
