A single DuckDB data lake allows analysts to query 6 billion negotiated rates without complex data engineering

BRENTWOOD, Tenn.: Trilliant Health, the healthcare industry's leading analytics firm, today announced that its comprehensive hospital price transparency dataset is now publicly available in a single DuckDB data lake, eliminating the need for complex data pipelines and enabling instant comparative analysis across more than 5,000 hospitals nationwide.

The release builds on Trilliant Health’s November update that centralized the individual hospital machine readable files (MRFs), making single-hospital files easy to query and use. Now, Trilliant Health has combined all of the hospital MRFs into a single database with more than 6 billion negotiated rates, making comparisons across hospitals possible for any analyst.

"The technical challenges of working with hospital price transparency data have been a massive barrier to adoption," said Matt O’Neill, Chief Data Officer for Trilliant Health. "Each hospital publishes files in different schemas with varying structures. Normalizing and joining these datasets typically requires weeks of ETL work and significant computational resources. We've consolidated that entire process into a single columnar database file that's optimized for analytical queries."

The DuckDB format is particularly well-suited for price transparency analysis because it enables SQL queries on massive datasets without requiring a database server. Analysts can run complex comparisons – such as identifying price variation for specific procedures across competing hospitals or quantifying negotiated rate differences between major payers – directly on their laptops.

"We chose DuckDB because it's built for analytical workloads and can handle complex aggregations across billions of rows without infrastructure overhead," O’Neill continued. "An analyst can now write a SQL query to compare negotiated rates for a specific CPT code across every hospital in the nation and get results in seconds. That same analysis previously would have required downloading hundreds of files, writing normalization scripts and provisioning cloud infrastructure."

The DuckDB file, like Trilliant Health's centralized MRF repository, is available at no cost to support broader market transparency and reduce waste in the U.S. healthcare system. The same underlying data powers Oria, the company's free AI chatbot for exploring hospital prices.
