TENGCHONG, China: #AI--The 2025 Tengchong Scientists Forum opened on Saturday in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, convening leading scientists and academic figures to examine innovation across frontier fields including artificial intelligence, biodiversity and quantum technology.
Notable participants include Nobel Physics laureate Konstantin Novoselov, Fields Medalist Efim Zelmanov and Turing Award winner Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, who join 127 academicians, 77 university presidents from China and abroad, over 400 scholars and more than 600 entrepreneurs and financiers. The gathering aims to deepen collaboration between cutting-edge research and industrial development.
Under the theme “Science · AI changing the World,” the forum features ten sub-forums, academic sessions and thematic events supporting major cooperation projects. Organizers say the program reinforces the forum’s role as a platform linking scientific innovation with industry.
Several key publications and rankings were released for the first time, including the Technology Foresight and Future Vision Report, the Top 10 Technology Transfer Cases, Top 10 Academic Achievements, and Top 10 Science and Technology Cooperation Initiatives of 2025, highlighting the forum’s expanding academic influence.
A major highlight is the debut of the Tengchong Young Scientist Award, covering ten disciplines such as mathematics, physics, life sciences, materials science, ecology, aerospace and interdisciplinary arts and sciences. The award honors outstanding researchers under 40 who have made significant contributions to fundamental research or technological innovation.
The forum also draws on the legacy of the National Southwest Associated University, known for its spirit of resilience and excellence. Jointly organized by Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University, the event includes a University Presidents Forum led by Peking University, where 77 university leaders explored strategies for integrated development in education, science and talent.
To strengthen global engagement, the forum invited more than 180 experts, scholars and business leaders from 26 countries. New outcomes related to Lancang–Mekong cooperation were also announced, linking to initiatives such as the “Wisdom Yunnan” program and the Lancang–Mekong National Science and Innovation Competition, which broaden opportunities for young scientists across South and Southeast Asia.
Organizers note that earlier editions of the forum established strong ties with global academic and industry communities and led to initiatives including the Declaration of the Tengchong Scientists Forum and the Tengchong Science Award, while facilitating numerous talent recruitment and investment projects.
