Veteran database architect to guide performance and operational reliability as enterprises operationalize AI on live analytical data

BOSTON: #DataArchitecture--AtScale, the leader in governed semantic layer technology, today announced that Chuck Bear has joined the company as Chief Architect. Bear will help advance AtScale’s semantic layer as the context foundation AI systems rely on to query live analytical data and will guide its evolution toward architectural simplicity, performance, and scalability across complex enterprise ecosystems.

Bear is a veteran systems architect best known for his role as Chief Architect of Vertica, where he helped shape one of the industry’s pioneering analytical database systems. His career spans startup co-founding roles and enterprise leadership positions, including serving as a Fellow at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Across these roles, he has focused on building high-performance, data-oriented software systems that balance performance, predictability, and operational simplicity at scale. Bear holds numerous patents and continues to contribute to open-source software projects.

“Enterprises aren’t struggling to generate answers, they’re struggling to trust them. AI can reason, but without deterministic metrics and governed access to live data, it produces confident guesses,” said Chris Lynch, Executive Chairman and CEO of AtScale. “Chuck helped build one of the defining analytical databases of the last generation. That experience matters as the semantic layer shifts from a BI convenience to infrastructure AI depends on, and as we establish it as the enterprise foundation for production AI.”

Bear will work across engineering and product to ensure the platform maintains the reliability and performance required for both business intelligence and autonomous AI workloads operating against live cloud data platforms.

“Systems behave very differently when software, not humans, becomes the primary consumer,” said Chuck Bear, Chief Architect at AtScale. “You go from occasional queries to constant concurrency. The challenge is preserving correctness while maintaining predictable performance at scale. That’s where a semantic layer has to operate more like infrastructure than middleware.”

Bear’s appointment follows the recent additions of Amy Miller and Luis Maldonado as AtScale builds out a leadership team to guide the company’s next phase of growth following its latest strategic equity financing led by Snowflake Ventures. Together, the expanded leadership group reflects AtScale’s focus on delivering governed analytics infrastructure reliable enough for both enterprise BI and automated decision-making systems.

About AtScale:

AtScale is the provider of the Universal Semantic Layer, the essential foundation for governed Enterprise AI and analytics. By providing a single, consistent source of business truth, AtScale enables the world’s largest enterprises to bridge the gap between raw cloud data and "speed of thought" insights. Following a strategic investment from Snowflake Ventures, AtScale is redefining how organizations deliver trusted data to AI agents, BI tools, and applications at scale.
