As students search for outcomes instead of institution names, brand name alone is no longer enough to drive enrollment.

CHICAGO: Everspring today released the 2026 AI Search Trends: Brand (In)Visibility Brief, the latest installment in its ongoing research into how AI is transforming student discovery. The findings point to a measurable shift: as students move away from searching by university name and toward outcome-driven questions, traditional brand-driven discovery is weakening.

Everspring analyzed more than 120 university domains across flagship and research universities, private nonprofit institutions, and regional comprehensive universities. The data shows that branded search volume declined across all institution types, with even steeper declines among private and regional schools.

“AI has permanently altered the competitive landscape in higher education,” said Beth Hollenberg, CEO of Everspring. “In a world where students search for outcomes over brand name, the question for institutional leaders is no longer just how strong their brand is. It’s whether their brand, their programs, and their value are showing up in the moments that shape student decisions. Institutions that don’t adapt risk being left out of consideration entirely.”

The research highlights how student search behavior is evolving alongside AI-powered search experiences, reshaping how universities are discovered, how their value is reflected, and whether their brand appears at all in key discovery moments.

“This is a shift in how visibility works,” said Michael Bell, Chief Marketing Officer at Everspring. “Students and their parents are discovering institutions through AI answers. For your next freshman class, showing up in those early questions is critical. The institutions that connect their value clearly to what students are asking are influencing decisions before a search for a school name happens.”

What’s inside the Brand (In)Visibility Brief

  • How branded search is declining across institution types
  • Where large, well-known universities are losing visibility in AI-driven discovery
  • Why smaller or lesser-known institutions are appearing more often in AI-generated answers
  • How content strategy-not brand size-is driving visibility in early discovery moments

Why this matters

Instead of beginning with a known set of schools, students are starting their search with questions about careers, costs, and outcomes, and relying on AI to guide them.

This shift is moving the moment of discovery earlier and outside traditional brand-driven pathways. Institutions that are visible in those early, question-based moments are more likely to be included in consideration. Those that are not risk losing influence, relevance, and competitive ground.
