Paubox will publish a benchmark of who builds with AI coding assistants inside healthcare, based on a survey of 151 leaders.
SAN FRANCISCO: #PHI--Paubox commissioned a survey of 151 healthcare leaders in July 2026. Respondents were screened to organizations that transmit protected health information (PHI) electronically. All of them already use AI coding assistants to build or modify software. Every data point is scoped to healthcare organizations already using these tools rather than to healthcare organizations generally.
The headline finding concerns people rather than technology. IT staff are building with AI coding assistants at 84% of the organizations surveyed, against 58% for developers and engineers. At roughly two in five of these organizations, developers are not among the builders at all.
The staff building with AI at most organizations sit outside the engineering function: IT teams, operations and administrative staff, compliance officers, and clinicians. Widening that pool came as a side effect of adoption. Four out of five healthcare leaders rate the ability to let non-developers build an important reason they adopted these tools. Eighty percent of the organizations surveyed have deployed AI-assisted tools that patients use directly.
Paubox will publish The 2026 benchmark for building with AI in healthcare, its first study of how healthcare organizations use AI coding assistants. The full report will cover the volume of tools these organizations are producing and what they build with AI assistance. It also maps the agent infrastructure connecting AI services to core systems, and where healthcare leaders expect AI-assisted development to go over the next 12 months.
