JERSEY CITY, N.J.: GRM Information Management, a leader in document storage and digitization, is seeing a significant increase in revenue attributable to a surge in demand for the storage of backup data tapes. This spike in demand for offsite storage space is due largely to the increase in large data sets created by the rise of AI. At all of its facilities across the US, GRM stores backup data tapes in special climate- and humidity-controlled vaults under ideal conditions for corporate clients.

While cloud storage remains the dominant way organizations archive historical data, backup tapes are gaining popularity for several reasons. The primary driver of growth in tape storage is the exponential creation of data driven by the adoption of AI. The massive data volumes created by AI have made relying entirely on cloud storage simply too expensive. Secondly, tapes represent lower long-term storage costs for archival storage or cold storage – data that must be maintained for multiple years and is rarely accessed. And finally, cloud storage costs have become unpredictable, particularly in the cost of downloading or retrieving massive volumes of archived data.

Avner Schneur, President and CEO of GRM states, “GRM has always been a forward-thinking and trusted partner of the business we serve. We recognized long ago that tape backup storage was a service that these organizations needed.” Schneur goes on to add, “And now, as these clients’ data retention strategies are evolving, we’re in a position to serve them with incremental storage and logistics services.”

Beyond cost, many companies are also relying more heavily on backup data tapes because they are an exceptionally secure way to store data. By virtue of them being completely disconnected from a network, they’re effectively immune to online cyberattacks. Additionally, using data tapes is less energy intensive than housing data assets in large cloud data centers.
