CANTON, Mass.: #HealthcareIT--MEDITECH announced today that Vice Chair and former CEO Howard Messing has been appointed Chair of the company's Board of Directors, following the recent passing of founder A. Neil Pappalardo. He was selected unanimously by the Board of Directors, and his appointment to Board Chairman was publicly announced before the Annual Shareholder Meeting held on April 27, 2026.
"It's a great honor for me to follow in Neil's footsteps," said Messing. "I heard from so many people after his passing, acknowledging his contributions to the early health tech industry and praising how he continued to reinvent and modernize MEDITECH's EHR solutions to ensure the company's ongoing success. Neil's approach to innovation and vision for a better healthcare system through technology has been a constant source of inspiration."
Neil's son, A. Michael Pappalardo, is also joining the Board of Directors, continuing the Pappalardo family's dedication to MEDITECH's mission and values. His appointment reflects both a deep understanding of the company's history and a commitment to its long-term success.
“I’m honored to join the talented and committed members of this board and continue the traditions my father established over his decades of leadership," Pappalardo said. "Howard has been an important leader for the company, and I'm delighted he will be serving as Board Chair. I look forward to working with him, the board, and our extraordinary officers to ensure a successful future for MEDITECH."
Messing's leadership during his 52 years with the company has spanned many roles from programmer to President, CEO, and Vice Chair - and has been instrumental in shaping the evolution of MEDITECH's technology and business strategies. This includes the ground-up development of MEDITECH Expanse - the industry's first cloud-based, web-native, and mobile EHR. He has also been a strong advocate for data sharing across the EHR vendor community and expanding interoperability across the industry to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
"We recognize the importance of healthcare IT to continuously adapt to how clinicians actually work," said Messing. "Expanse was one of the first EHR redesigns in the post-Meaningful Use era, and brought the groundbreaking benefits of a single electronic record to the full continuum of care - including a new, fully integrated ambulatory solution."
MEDITECH President and CEO Michelle O'Connor commented on how well-positioned MEDITECH is for the future, as a result of the new appointments. “MEDITECH's ownership structure and governance model remain firmly in place, ensuring continuity in our leadership, strategy, and operations. We are confident in a bright and successful future for the company," she said.
