New specification provides a comprehensive framework for securing every stage of blockchain transactions, from creation through to execution
WAKEFIELD, Mass.: #BSSC--The Blockchain Security Standards Council (BSSC) today announced the release of the Blockchain Transaction Lifecycle Security Standard, a new specification to improve the security of blockchain transactions. By establishing requirements for the entire transaction process, it addresses both consumer-facing wallets and the specialized tools enterprises use to manage transaction workflows.
The new Blockchain Transaction Lifecycle Security Standard defines what each component in the lifecycle must do to help ensure that transactions remain secure, and that users can clearly understand and verify what they are approving.
Ensuring that the intent captured when a transaction is created is the same intent ultimately signed and deployed addresses a longstanding industry challenge protecting against attacks such as the 1.5 Billion USD Bybit hack in 2025, as well as smaller but far more frequent issues that cause a steady stream of losses.
“The Blockchain Transaction Lifecycle (BTL) Standard is a first-of-its-kind framework designed to establish security best practices for transaction systems that have historically received limited scrutiny,” said Max Courchesne-Mackie, Director of Security Engineering at Figment and co-editor of the specification. “By defining the transaction lifecycle broadly, the standard accommodates a wide range of use cases and system architectures while maintaining rigorous expectations for security and transparency.”
Unlike the existing efforts that primarily evaluate and “rank” wallet security, the Blockchain Transaction Lifecycle Security Standard focuses on the implementation of security requirements across the transaction ecosystem, from all-in-one wallet applications to component-based transaction systems used to meet sophisticated operational requirements.
The specification is intended for a broad range of stakeholders, including:
In addition to improving security for individual organizations, broad adoption of the standard will strengthen trust across the blockchain ecosystem. Consistently building security into transaction tools helps ensure transaction data is properly verified, validated, and protected. As these protections become more widely adopted, they reduce systemic risk and recurring losses across the broader ecosystem.
BSSC encourages organizations developing or using blockchain transaction tools to review the specification, evaluate how their systems align with its requirements, and implement the recommended protections. The Council also invites industry participants to provide feedback that can help further refine and strengthen future versions of the standard.
